Beyond Thiel: The Full Ecosystem of Aligned Actors
The network is wider than any single funder. Thiel is the gravitational center of one axis — but the full ecosystem includes parallel operations and aligned actors who arrived at compatible ends through different intellectual traditions and methods. Some of these figures have direct, documented financial ties to Thiel. Others share personnel, funders, or ideological infrastructure without a direct line. Others — Kristol, Frum, Singer — represent an older expression of the same civilizational commitment operating through a different strategic theory. They are included here because understanding the intramural argument about method illuminates the destination that all parties share. These are not all the same kind of connection. The resource labels each accordingly.

If Thiel is the architect of the network, Joe Lonsdale is its most active builder in the next generation. A Palantir co-founder who left in 2009, Lonsdale went on to found 8VC — a venture capital firm raising $1 billion for its sixth fund as of 2026 — and the Cicero Institute, a right-wing think tank operating in Texas that critics have accused of criminalizing homelessness and expanding corporate power over municipal governance.
Lonsdale followed his mentor Thiel's playbook almost precisely: Palantir → venture capital → political funding → think tank infrastructure. He co-founded America PAC alongside Elon Musk — the super PAC that raised hundreds of millions for Trump's 2024 campaign. In 2023 he backed DeSantis, then switched to Trump when DeSantis faltered. He has stated publicly that he wants Texas to strip Austin of its municipal authority.
8VC's portfolio runs heavily toward defense tech — drone systems, autonomous naval vessels, companies positioned for the same government contracting relationships Palantir cultivated. The Lonsdale orbit is building what analysts call a "parallel Palantir" — a second node in the defense-tech-to-government pipeline, centered on Austin rather than Denver.

Josh Hammer is the most important figure in understanding how the network interfaces with legacy media. As Senior Editor-at-Large at Newsweek — a once-mainstream publication that has shifted dramatically rightward — Hammer provides institutional media credentials to ideas and figures that originate in the BAPsphere and the NatCon circuit. He is the translation layer between the online right and respectable print media.
His connections run deep. He is a Research Fellow at the Edmund Burke Foundation — NatCon's organizing body, where Thiel is a listed signatory and funder. He sits on the advisory board of American Moment alongside JD Vance. He met Vance at NatCon 1 in 2019 and has described their friendship and shared intellectual trajectory in his own newsletter. He spoke at every NatCon from 1 through 5. He formerly edited at The Daily Wire. He holds fellowships with the David Horowitz Freedom Center and the Federalist Society.
The significance of Hammer's Newsweek position cannot be overstated. A publication that still carries mainstream media brand recognition is now edited at the senior level by someone embedded in the NatCon/Thiel network's advisory structure. Ideas that would be dismissed as fringe if published on a Substack are laundered through the Newsweek masthead into apparent mainstream credibility. This is the network operating at full sophistication: not replacing mainstream media but colonizing it from within.

The National Conservatism Conference — organized by Yoram Hazony's Edmund Burke Foundation — is the annual gathering where the entire network makes itself visible in one room. Thiel was a keynote speaker at NatCon 1 (2019) alongside Tucker Carlson and Josh Hawley. He is a listed signatory of the NatCon declaration of principles. He is named as a funder. Palantir's Chief Technology Officer Shyam Sankar spoke at NatCon 5 (2025).
NatCon is where the layers collapse into each other publicly: BAPsphere figures, elected officials, Thiel network personnel, defense contractors, dark-money donors, and media personalities all share the same stage and the same hallway conversations. The NatCon after-party documented by Vanity Fair in 2021 — attended by Yarvin, Vance, Hammer, Michael Anton, Lomez, and others — is the most vivid documented moment of this convergence.
The Edmund Burke Foundation's funding remains largely opaque. Confirmed sponsors include Thiel and Cathy and Alex Cranberg (who provided at least $350,000). The Foundation's international expansion — NatCon London, NatCon Brussels — represents the network's most explicit attempt to export its ideological program to European politics, where it has found significant traction with figures like Viktor Orbán.

American Moment is perhaps the most important institution in the extended network that most people have never heard of. Founded in 2021 by Saurabh Sharma, Nick Solheim, and Jake Mercier — all in their early twenties — its mission is stated with unusual directness: to "identify, educate, and credential young Americans who will implement public policy" aligned with the New Right. Its founding advisory board included JD Vance and Josh Hammer.
American Moment is a staffing agency for the Thiel network's political project. It recruits young conservatives, trains them in New Right policy priorities, and places them in congressional offices, federal agencies, and conservative organizations. Its Fellowship for American Statecraft is a twelve-week paid program explicitly designed to build the next generation of government personnel. The organization describes its medium-term goal as "substantially changing the composition of the staffing pool on the American right."
In 2024, American Moment's president Saurabh Sharma was simultaneously named executive director of the Edmund Burke Foundation — formally merging the youth recruitment pipeline with NatCon's intellectual infrastructure under a single executive. Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation and intellectual architect of Project 2025, called Sharma "one of the most gifted leaders of modern conservatism." The merger of American Moment and the Edmund Burke Foundation represents the network's most explicit institutional consolidation to date: the conference that sets the ideology and the organization that supplies the personnel are now run by the same person.

Section 06 — The Philosophy
The Intellectual Architecture: Yarvin, Girard, and the End of Democracy Project
The Thiel network is not simply a political operation. It is built on a coherent philosophical foundation — one that has been deliberately constructed over two decades to justify what it is doing. To understand the network fully, you have to understand the ideas that animate it. There are two primary sources: Curtis Yarvin's neoreactionary program, and Peter Thiel's selective appropriation of René Girard's mimetic theory. Together they constitute a complete worldview — a diagnosis of what is wrong with civilization and a prescription for what must replace it.
Curtis Yarvin — The Cathedral and the CEO-Monarch

Curtis Yarvin — who wrote for years under the pseudonym Mencius Moldbug — is the most important political philosopher you have probably never heard of. He began writing on his blog Unqualified Reservations in 2007, and by the early 2020s his ideas had migrated from anonymous internet forums to the Vice President's stated intellectual influences, to the biography of every Thiel Fellow who quoted him in their Twitter bio.
His philosophy rests on four interlocking concepts. Understanding each one is necessary to understand what is currently happening in American government.
Concept 01
The Cathedral — the enemy is not the government, it is consensus reality itself

The Cathedral is Yarvin's term for the coordinated ideological apparatus that, in his view, runs modern society without anyone electing it or consenting to it. It is not a conspiracy. It is what Yarvin calls an "emergent" system — universities, mainstream media, NGOs, progressive foundations, and the administrative state, all producing the same general worldview without requiring central coordination, in the same way that a market produces prices without anyone setting them.
The Cathedral concept is the most operationally significant idea in the entire network. Once you accept it, every mainstream source of information becomes suspect by definition. The New York Times is Cathedral. Harvard is Cathedral. The FBI is Cathedral. Your doctor is Cathedral. The only sources that escape the Cathedral are the ones operating outside it — which, conveniently, are the sources Thiel funds and the figures the BAPsphere promotes.
This is the epistemological moat described in the network overview. The Cathedral concept is not a conclusion — it is a starting assumption that makes all contrary evidence self-refuting. Any institution that challenges the network's claims is, by definition, Cathedral. It is among the most effective epistemic closure mechanisms in modern political philosophy.
Luke Farritor, the Thiel Fellow embedded in DOGE, carried a direct Yarvin Cathedral reference in his Twitter profile biography. This is not incidental. Understanding the Cathedral is a prerequisite for understanding DOGE's mission: not reform, but the deliberate dismantling of the Cathedral's institutional expressions.
Concept 02
The Red Pill — democracy is an illusion, and waking up means rejecting it

Yarvin explicitly borrowed the Red Pill concept from The Matrix to describe the moment of political awakening he wants to induce. To take the Red Pill, in his formulation, is to accept that "democracy is bunk" — that democratic participation is a simulation designed to give people the impression of political agency while real power is exercised by the Cathedral.
This concept was the direct ancestor of virtually every "red pill" usage in internet culture — from men's rights forums to chan boards to the BAPsphere. Yarvin's political Red Pill became a cultural meme that spread far beyond his direct readership, priming millions of young men for political demobilization under the guise of awakening. The man who believed he was waking people up was, structurally, putting them to sleep — redirecting their political energy away from participation and toward contempt for institutions.
The irony — noted by several critics — is that this "awakening" serves the interests of the most powerful people in society. A population that believes democratic participation is meaningless does not organize, does not vote strategically, does not build coalitions. It watches. It posts. It feels superior to the people still engaged in "the simulation." Meanwhile, the people who funded the philosopher who told them to disengage are very much engaged — in staffing the government, winning contracts, and rewriting policy.
Concept 03
The CEO-Monarch — replace democracy with a sovereign who rules like a startup

Yarvin's solution to the Cathedral is what he calls "neocameralism" — replacing democratic governance with a sovereign joint-stock corporation. The nation's large stakeholders elect a CEO-monarch with total executive power, unencumbered by legislatures, courts, or constitutions. The CEO rules efficiently, like a startup. Dissenting shareholders can sell their stake — meaning leave the country. Citizens become shareholders or employees. Rights become perks, granted and revoked by management.
Yarvin explicitly cites Singapore under Lee Kuan Yew and Deng Xiaoping's China as models. He has said: "A national CEO is what's called a dictator." He has also said Trump is not the CEO — the CEO is whomever Trump installs to run the executive branch. Multiple observers have noted the parallel with Elon Musk's DOGE role: not elected, not confirmed, not accountable, running the machinery of government like a restructuring exercise at a failing company.
The most important thing about the CEO-Monarch concept: it is a framework designed to make a specific class of people — tech founders, large shareholders, people like Thiel — into the natural governing class. It is not a neutral theory of efficient governance. It is a philosophical argument that those who have already accumulated the most capital and power should govern without democratic interference.
Concept 04
RAGE / The Butterfly — capture the state from within before anyone notices

RAGE — Retire All Government Employees — is Yarvin's operational prescription. Rather than winning elections and then governing, the strategy is to capture the administrative state's personnel entirely: fire the existing civil servants, replace them with loyalists, and use the state's own machinery to dismantle the Cathedral from within. The operation must move faster than institutional resistance can organize.
Yarvin calls the full strategy the "Butterfly Revolution" — a reference to the idea that a small, fast initial move (a butterfly flapping its wings) can produce cascading systemic change. The Butterfly's core logic: seize the communications infrastructure and the personnel records first, before opposition can coordinate.
The overlap with DOGE is not coincidental or superficial. DOGE's first actions — accessing OPM personnel data, the Treasury payment systems, HHS records, the Social Security Administration — match the Butterfly's prescribed sequence with near-perfect fidelity. Yarvin has been explicit about this: in interviews after Trump's inauguration he described DOGE as implementing something close to his framework, while noting that Trump himself was not the CEO in his model — the CEO would be installed later.
Peter Thiel and René Girard — The Apocalypse as Investment Thesis

René Girard was a French-American literary critic and anthropologist who spent his career at Stanford, where Thiel studied under him as an undergraduate in the late 1980s. Girard's mimetic theory is one of the most ambitious intellectual systems of the twentieth century — a unified account of human desire, violence, religion, and civilization built on a single insight: we do not desire things because of their intrinsic value. We desire them because someone else desires them.
Thiel has called himself a "hardcore, unreconstructed Girardian." He founded an organization — Imitatio — dedicated to developing and studying Girard's ideas. He has said Girard gave him a theory of the entire world. He used mimetic theory to make his early investment in Facebook, reasoning that a platform built on social comparison and imitation was structurally guaranteed to be addictive.

What Thiel did with Girard — and what makes his version dangerous — is that he took the diagnostic half of the theory and discarded the prescriptive half. Here is what Girard actually argued, versus what Thiel extracted from it:
What Girard actually argued
Mimetic desire — imitating what others want — inevitably produces rivalry and escalating violence. Ancient societies managed this through the scapegoat mechanism: collective violence directed at a victim that temporarily restores social peace.
The Christian revelation, for Girard, exposes this mechanism by showing the scapegoat as innocent. This exposure makes the old sacrificial system impossible to operate unconsciously. We live in the resulting crisis — a world that knows what it is doing but cannot stop.
Girard's conclusion was political caution and humility — the Gospel as the only resolution, the recognition that no one stands outside the mimetic system, including visionary founders. He was deeply suspicious of political action as resolution.
What Thiel extracted from it
Thiel kept Girard's apocalyptic diagnosis — civilization is in terminal mimetic crisis — and discarded his prescriptive conclusion. In his 2004 essay The Straussian Moment, Thiel triangulated Girard with Carl Schmitt (politics as friend/enemy distinction) and Leo Strauss (esoteric knowledge for an elite few).
The result: a philosophy that says civilization is collapsing due to mimetic disorder, that only a rational sovereign standing outside the mimetic herd can navigate the crisis, and that this sovereign should use Schmittian friend/enemy logic to manage the collapse.
Critics — including scholars of Girard — note that Girard's theory explicitly denies that anyone stands outside the mimetic system, including visionary founders. Thiel's architecture requires exactly the position Girard says is impossible: a caste of rational sovereigns exempt from the dynamics they are managing.
The practical implication of Thiel's Girard-minus-Gospel is this: if civilization is in terminal mimetic crisis, and if a rational sovereign can navigate that crisis, then the disruption of existing institutions is not destruction — it is surgery. DOGE is not vandalism. It is a scalpel. The dismantling of regulatory agencies is not chaos. It is clearing the ground for the new order. The funding of an anti-democratic philosopher, the placement of his students in government, the construction of a surveillance infrastructure — all of this can be understood, within Thiel's framework, as the responsible management of an inevitable apocalyptic transition.

This is why the Thiel network is not simply a political operation motivated by greed or ideology. It is, from the inside, a civilizational project. Its participants believe, with genuine intellectual conviction, that liberal democracy is in terminal crisis, that the existing order must be dissolved before something better can emerge, and that they — by virtue of understanding this when others do not — are the appropriate people to manage the transition. The money and the power are not the point. They are the instrument.
Whether you find that more or less alarming than simple greed is a question worth sitting with.
The Philosophical Triangle: Thiel's Three Sources
Thiel's 2004 essay "The Straussian Moment" explicitly triangulates these three thinkers. Understanding the combination is more important than understanding any one of them individually.
René Girard (1923–2015)
Contribution to Thiel's system: The apocalyptic timeline. Civilization is in terminal mimetic crisis. The diagnosis is correct. The Christian resolution is discarded.
What was left behind: The conclusion that no one stands outside mimesis. Political humility. The impossibility of the rational sovereign.
Carl Schmitt (1888–1985)
Contribution to Thiel's system: Politics is fundamentally the friend/enemy distinction. The sovereign is whoever decides the exception — whoever can declare an emergency and suspend normal rules.
Context: Schmitt was the crown jurist of the Nazi regime. His rehabilitation in Thiel's framework is not incidental. The friend/enemy logic and the sovereign exception are precisely the tools needed to justify what the network is doing.
Leo Strauss (1899–1973)
Contribution to Thiel's system: Esoteric writing — the idea that true political knowledge must be concealed from the masses and communicated only to the rational few who can handle it. The philosopher-king must appear to say one thing while meaning another.
In practice: The network's public messaging (populism, nationalism, anti-elitism) and its actual program (oligarchic consolidation, anti-democracy) are operating on two separate levels simultaneously.
The combination is precise: Girard supplies the crisis narrative that makes radical action feel justified and urgent. Schmitt supplies the political logic that makes the suspension of democratic norms feel necessary and legitimate. Strauss supplies the communication strategy that explains why the true program must be concealed from the public. A political operation built on these three foundations can present itself as populist nationalism while executing a consolidation of capital and power, can describe the dismantling of democratic institutions as civilizational rescue, and can produce genuine intellectual conviction in its participants that they are doing the right thing.
This is the most important thing to understand about the network: it is not cynical at its core. The people executing this program largely believe in it. That makes it more dangerous than a simple grift.
The Thread Running Through: Strauss, Jewish Civilization, and the Intramural Argument
There is a thread running through this entire network that most coverage either misses or deliberately avoids naming. It does not explain everything, but it explains more than is usually acknowledged. Leo Strauss was, from the age of seventeen and for the rest of his life, a Zionist. His early Zionism was secular, sober, and explicitly political — shaped by Pinsker and Herzl, focused on the realities of power rather than cultural romanticism. He regarded the establishment of Israel in 1948 as an unambiguous blessing. In 1956 he wrote a letter to National Review making the conservative case for Israel to an American right-wing audience, characterizing it as a project of "heroic austerity" rooted in biblical antiquity. The scholarship is clear that this Zionist commitment was not an early phase he outgrew — it remained formative for his mature political thought.
The neoconservative movement that Strauss's students built — Irving Kristol, Norman Podhoretz, their children and intellectual descendants — was explicit about what it shared. Irving Kristol wrote of the evangelical alliance: "It is their theology, but it is our Israel." Commentary Magazine's primary literature describes a fervent commitment to Israel's security as "one of the few universally shared fundamental principles" of neoconservatism across its otherwise wide range of views. The Project for the New American Century, the Iraq War rationale, the NATO expansion advocacy, the democracy-promotion agenda — these are best understood not as abstract values but as a strategic theory: that a liberal democratic order underwritten by American military power is the international environment most conducive to Israeli and Jewish civilizational security.
The Thiel/NatCon axis does not reject this goal. It rejects this theory.
